(2) Kronik komplikasyonlar ‧Kardiyovasküler hastalıklar Şeker hastalığında meydana gelen ölümlerin en sık görülen nedenlerinden olan kalp krizi ve felce neden olur ‧Göz hastalıkları (diyabetik retinopati) körlüğe kadar gidebilecek retina hasarı ‧Böbrek hastalıkları (diyabetik nefropati) üremi ve tam böbrek yetmezliği, dolayısıyla ömür boyu diyaliz veya böbrek nakline yol açar ‧Sinir hastalıkları (diyabetik nöropati) Otonomik nöropati, idrar kesesini, sindirim yolunu ve jenital bölgeleri v.b. kontrol eden otonomik sinirleri etkiler. Periferik nöropati ayak parmaklarında, ayaklarda ve bacaklarda anormal hassasiyete neden olur, bu da yara ve enfeksiyonların kolayca oluşmasına yol açar.
